Communications between attorneys and their clients that are privileged and confidential fall under what is known as attorney-client privilege. In order for communication with the attorney to be effective, the client must be able to share all relevant information without having to worry about it being used against him/her in court. Typically, it begins to apply before a person has even hired an attorney. Conversations you have with an attorney seeking or providing legal advice even before you retained the attorney are still covered by the privilege. In regards to personal injury lawsuits, the attorney-client privilege is important during the discovery phase because it allows the client to feel comfortable sharing all relevant information about the case and assists the attorney and presenting the case.
