Switching Attorneys? Advice From a Personal Injury Attorney La Mesa

The relationship between a lawyer and their client is upheld as sacrosanct. Maintaining law and order and providing counsel to everyone no matter their class or creed is valued to the highest degree in our society. However, there are times when the lawyer that you retained does not represent you in a professional manner or does not maintain good lines of communication.  If this happens, seeking out another lawyer should not be your first solution.

Lawyers have a large work load, so it is vital that you articulate your desired relationship during your initial consultation. Not all firms can arrange monthly face to face meetings or weekly calls. Attorney Brett Geruntino disclosed that “many people want to switch attorney’s because they think their case is taking too long or they think their attorney is not working hard enough on their case,” in contrast, if a lawyer is unable to meet with you or speak with you immediately, you should not be alarmed as lawyers have other client’s they must also communicate with as well as important court dates and deadlines they must meet.

Additionally, lawyers typically have a team of paralegals, legal secretaries, and legal assistants that set goals to contact clients periodically with updates on their case. You can expect to speak with a paralegal or legal assistant if you have a question regarding your case. If you are seeking legal advice or have significant questions, the lawyer managing your case will contact you as soon as they are available.

If you are not receiving the attention you desire after you retained your lawyer, it is important to first broach the topic with your lawyer, or their team, so they can address it before attempting to switch to another lawyer. It is “generally not advisable to switch attorney’s mid-way through a case, Attorney Geruntino says, “your current attorney knows the most about your situation and should be working toward a resolution. However, if you are having a difficult time getting answers because they never call you back, it might be time to find an attorney that is willing to keep you updated on your case.”

If, after expressing your concern, you are still not getting the attention you desire, switching to another lawyer is a proper solution.  While it is not advised that you switch attorney at the first sign of displeasure, it is recognized that good communication in the attorney-client relationship is essential to proper representation. If you retained an attorney who is neglecting your case a personal injury lawyer La Mesa will address any questions you may have. Please call (858) 252-0781 to set up a free consultation.
